Sen. Carol Williams for SD46
MCV is proud to again endorse the current State Senate Majority Leader in her re-election bid.
Carol Williams has had a long career as an activist, peacemaker, educator, mother and grandmother. As a fifth generation Montanan, her professional and personal life has been dedicated to ensuring that the next generations of Montanans have a bright future.
Carol is an MCV Conservation Champion, holding a 100% voting record for the 2005 & 2007 MT Legislative Sessions. During the 2005 MT Legislative Session, Senator Carol Williams introduced SB 281, which would have allowed state agencies to use information gathered in environmental reviews to condition state permits to prevent harm to public health and safety, fish and wildlife. State agencies had this authority - and used it judiciously and effectively - prior to 2001, when the legislature prohibited state agencies from using information gathered through the Montana Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) to protect the public unless there is a state permitting law specifically giving them that authority. This bill was one of the conservation community's Common Agenda bills, but failed 3rd reading in the Senate, 25-25.
Senator Williams feels strongly that the MT Legislature needs to create a long-term plan for affordable and reliable energy for Montana, including incentives to encourage the production of biofuels in Montana. The Senator also sees a clean, healthy environment as a necessary priority in Montana, while recognizing that a "healthy environment and a growing economy should be seen as complementary goals." Sen. Williams feels that we can develop responsible sustainable policies to protect natural resources, while ensuring a clean and healthy environment in Montana that respects Montana's cultural heritage and love of the outdoors and continues to allow Montanans continued access to world-class hunting, fishing and recreational opportunities.
She is unopposed in the this fall's election.
