Beth Baker for Montana Supreme Court, an attorney from Helena, is running for the seat vacated by Justice William Leaphart. She has 25 years of legal experience, both in private practice and as an assistant attorney general under Marc Racicot and later Joe Mazurek. She became Chief Deputy in the Department of Justice in 1997, overseeing roughly 50 attorneys and staff. She was the department’s legislative liaison, working to enact laws important to public health and safety. Beth has volunteered extensively for conservation groups. She also volunteers for the Montana Legal Services Association, providing free legal services to Montana families, and the Montanan Justice Foundation, fighting for equal access to justice. Her opponent, Nels Swandal, did not seek MCV’s endorsement.

Ken Toole for Public Service Commission, District 5 is running for re-election to the Public Service Commission in District 5, stretching from Helena to the Flathead Valley. Ken is a champion for Montana rate payers who led the charge to require Qwest to cut rates by $16 million a year and expand high-speed Internet into 27 small towns. Ken fights to hold energy companies accountable to consumers. He served six years in the Montana Senate where he championed renewable energy, and served on the Environmental Quality Council. He faces Bill Gallagher (R-Helena) who did not seek MCV’s endorsement, and defeated former Secretary of State Brad Johnson in the primary. Johnson suspended his PSC campaign right before the primary to enter treatment after being charged with a DUI.

Jim Reynolds for District Court Judge in the First Judicial District has the experience, ability and integrity to serve on the bench in this critical race. Jim is an attorney with the Reynolds, Sherwood, Motl law firm, and has represented a diversity of clients, over 31 years. Jim was co-counsel on the case that resulted in the release of boxes of documents from the city of Great Falls over its involvement in the development and funding of the Highwood coal generating plant, represented backers of the “cap the rate” ballot measure, was successful in defending Helena’s clean indoor act and successfully represented Montanans for Dam Cheap Power, the group backing the buy-back the dams initiative. Jim has been involved as a volunteer and member of many local and state groups. Jim is opposed by Helena attorney Dennis Loveless, who participated in the MCV endorsement process.

Mike Murray for Lewis and Clark County Commission. Montana Conservation Voters has endorsed Mike Murray for re-election to the Lewis and Clark County Commission. Mike has served on the Commission for 18 years, and brings a wealth of experience on protection of open lands, planning and zoning, water protection, transportation and county government. Mike was part of the county commission action to appeal a U.S. Forest Service oil and gas leasing decision, leading to protection of Helena’s water shed, a corridor on the Continental Divide, the Elk Horn Mountains and the southern portion of the Rocky Mountain Front.
Mike supports protection of roadless areas, and has been a voice for our natural heritage and protecting the Front as part of the Montana Association of County Commissioners and the National Association of County Commissioners. Mike also has been an advocate for trails, walkable communities and is an open space bond supporter. Mike chairs the MACCO resolutions committee and has pledged to work with Montana Conservation Voters and the conservation and environmental community to make progress on planning and growth as the county continues to face development challenges. Mike is opposed in this election by Bob Hollow, who took part in our endorsement process and is running as an Independent, and Republican Jeff Driessen, who did not participate in the endorsement process.
With eight days left in the election, this endorsement comes out late, but many folks have not returned absentee ballots, and a good share may be polling place voters on November 2nd. SD 11 Anders Blewett (D – Great Falls) is running for the Senate seat vacated by Sen. Trudi Schmidt who is term-limited. He earned a 100% MCV voting score in his first term in office. As an attorney at Hoyt & Blewett in Great Falls, Anders helps force responsible parties to clean up pollution. He graduated from Harvard and the University of Montana School of Law. Anders faces former legislator Jim Whitaker (R) in the general election. Whitaker did not seek MCV’s endorsement.

SD 13 Kathleen Galvin-Halcro (D – Great Falls) is a Great Falls schoolteacher who served in the Montana State House from 1999 - 2005, earning a lifetime MCV score of 95%. She is running for the open Senate seat vacated by Sen. Joe Tropilla. Kathleen faces Edward Buttrey (R) in the general election, who did not participate in MCV’s endorsement process.

SD 17 Rep. Bob Bergren (D - Havre), Speaker of the House, has served four terms as the Montana House District 33 Representative. He is running for the open Senate seat vacated by Sen. Ken Hansen who can’t run again due to term limits. During his last term, Bergren earned a 91% MCV voting score. He earned recognition in MCV’s 2005 legislative scorecard for improving his voting record from the previous session. Bob and his wife own a small business. Prior to that, Bob worked for the Havre Fire Department as a firefighter and EMT for 21 years. Bergren faces Republican Rowlie D. Hutton in November.

SD 25 Kendall Van Dyk (D - Billings) has served 4 years in the legislature representing HD 49, and is the chair of the House Fish, Wildlife and Parks committee. Kendall has a 100% MCV score, and sponsored an important law that overcame years of partisan gridlock, and guarantees stream access. Kendall will support clean, renewable energy and protect our right to hunt and fish. Kendall defeated Linda Wetzel in the primary, and is working to defeat Senator Roy Brown in November.

SD 30 Aaron Kampfe (D – Red Lodge) operates an international travel business and is a fourth generation Montanan whose family ranched in Roscoe. His grandfather, Bill Mackay Sr., served in the Montana State Senate as a Republican. Kampfe is currently serving in his fourth year on Red Lodge City Council. Kampfe considers preservation of open space and Montana’s agricultural heritage as one of his top priorities if elected. SD 31 Julia Page (D – Gardiner) is a long-time grassroots leader of Montana Conservation Voters, Northern Plains Resource Council and their local affiliate, and the Greater Yellowstone Coalition. She owned and operated Yellowstone Raft Company in Gardiner for twenty seven years and is an avid outdoors person. Julia is committed to small businesses and knows they drive the economy. In the general election, Julia faces Ron Arthun (R), who did not participate in MCV’s endorsement process. Arthur defeated former Rep. Pat Wagman in the June primary.

SD 40 Mary Caferro (D – Helena) was first elected to serve in the House in HD 80 in 2004. In her three terms in office, she earned a lifetime score of 100% on MCV’s scorecard. Mary is a community organizer, and directs WEEL, a low-income advocacy group. In 2009, she sponsored a measure to develop our clean energy economy by promoting green jobs in Montana. SD 48 Tom Facey (D – Missoula) is a Missoula teacher who served in the Montana State House from 1999 - 2005, earning a lifetime MCV score of 100 %. SD 49 Dave Wanzenried (D – Missoula), whohas earned a lifetime MCV voting score of 96%, is running for a second term for the district encompassing a large portion of Missoula's west side. Dave served a total of five terms in the Montana House of Representatives, two terms from Kalispell (1991-95) and three from Missoula (2001-07), before moving to the Montana Senate in 2007. Dave also serves on the Environmental Quality Council, and has been a strong leader fighting to protect Montana’s water quality and quantity. He faces Kevin Kerr (R) in the general election.

HD 3 Zac Perry (D – Martin City) is running for this open seat encompassing Columbia Falls, the Glacier-area canyon and the North Fork of the Flathead River drainage. Zac runs a small communications business. He plans to take his entrepreneurial spirit to Helena to fight for public education, access to public lands, and our right to hunt and fish. He faces former Republican Senator Jerry O’Neill and Independent Shawn Guymon in the general election. Neither candidate participated in MCV’s endorsement process.

HD 4 Will Hammerquist (D – Whitefish) is running for the open seat vacated by conservationist Mike Jopek. Hammerquist grew up in a hard working family in the Flathead, where he developed a strong work-ethic and a love for the outdoors. Will currently works for the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), where he has helped protect the Flathead River and Glacier National Park from coal and oil development. Prior to his work with NPCA, Will was a policy advisor to Lt. Gov. Bolinger. He faces Derek Skees, who did not participate in MCV’s endorsement process.

HD 33 Jack Trethewey (D – Havre) is a union firefighter and convenience store owner in Havre running for this seat which covers western Hill County. Speaker of the House Bob Bergren, is term-limited from the seat and running for the State Senate. Jack is particularly concerned about protecting Havre’s drinking water supply, potentially endangered by the aging St. Mary’s diversion of the Milk River. He would also like to bring a program to MSU Northern to train technicians to develop and maintain renewable energy systems. Jack defeated Phillip DeFelice in the primary. HD 34 Dana Sapp Seidel (D – Havre) is a nurse making her first bid for political office.
