Billings Conservation Roundtable: Meet the City Council Candidates

to

Mark your calendars for the next Billings Conservation Roundtable, set for Tuesday, October 16, 2007 from noon – 1:15 p.m. in the basement of Broadway Place at 207 North Broadway, room co50 in Billings.

This is now the Valley City Credit Union downtown building. This is a chance to meet candidates who are running for the Billings City Council in the upcoming November 6th election.  Lunch can be obtained at the Back Porch Deli, or bring your own brown bag.

Candidates on the ballot, all of whom have been invited, include, in alphabetical order

Ward 1: Peggie Gaghen, incumbent and Kurt Zygmond

Ward 2: Larry Brewster, incumbent and Denis Pitman

Ward 3: Mark Elison and Vince Ruegamer, incumbent

Ward 4: Open seat David Fishbaugh, Michael Larson and Jani McCall

Ward 5: Dick Clark, incumbent

So far, four candidates have confirmed their attendance, one is checking his schedule, and messages have been left with the other five.

The format for this meeting is that Montana Conservation Voters will open with groups introducing themselves. No announcements or presentations, please, as we want the focus to be kept to the City Council candidates. This will be followed by a short review of the upcoming city races and all mailed ballots, which are new this year. Then, each candidate will be given 2 -3 minutes, (or more, depending on how many candidates) to speak about why they are running and their views on city conservation and environmental priorities.  After all candidates have had a chance to speak, questions from the Roundtable participants will be fielded  This format will be adjusted if needed to accommodate candidates’ schedules.

PLEASE COME PREPARED WITH YOUR QUESTIONS FOR THE CANDIDATES ON CITY CONSERVATION PRIORITIES. ONLY IF TIME ALLOWS WILL QUESTIONS ON OTHER TOPICS BE CONSIDERED.

I will bring information on the elections, a map of the Wards in the city, and responses the Montana Conservation Voters’ questionnaire from those candidates who completed it. Though Montana Conservation Voters has already had one event where candidates met with MCV membership, I am extending an invitation to all candidates to attend this Roundtable meeting to make sure people have another opportunity to meet the candidates.

Remember, this year, the Billings City Council will be conducted by all mailed ballots, which you will receive by October 17th if you are a registered voter in the city limits. The Roundtable meeting is a chance to become more informed on candidates’ views as you prepare to cast your ballot. You have until November 6th, 8 p.m. to cast your ballot.  If you don’t receive a ballot or are unsure of your voter registration status, contact the Yellowstone County Election office at 256.2740. You may register and vote there, up to and including the November 6th election day.
